IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME

EXPRESSING AN IDEA

What does the world mean to you? When someone says, “That means the world to me”, what do you think they mean? It’s a huge scope to be compared with and a hard thing to match isn’t it.

What if a child 6 years old brings you their favorite tiny rock you respond, “I love it. It means the world to me.” What do you think the child will think he brought you; the world in a rock, a trip to the park, a map or what? Good question.

I actually think the value of the meaning is long forgotten.   No one really thinks about what the world actually means to anyone anymore. “It means the world to me”, is now just an off hand remark. Words strung together with some vague meaning that this or that means something because the world is so large in size.

LONG FORGOTTEN MEANINGS

I think a millennium ago, its meaning would have been totally different. The world would have meant the earth they stood on that sustained all life. That’s what they knew as they stood on the earth and it  housed, clothed and fed them. Their world was the earth and it meant life and death to them. It was sacred to them and they took care of it as it cared for them. No separation as it was one with them, .

That’s what we have lost. That oneness. That wholeness. We only see separation in everything. Most people see the earth as a pile of dirt over there. They take it for granted that it will just be there and no one has to care about it or take care of it. It’s OK for companies to punch holes in that pile of dirt, fill it with garbage, build on it, or even blow it up. It’s “for the good of mankind” because it is separate from us.

LOSS

How do we reconcile “That means the world to me” with all the destruction we do to it? What happens when man destroys this world?

Where is your separation then?

Lately I have felt a love for the earth and appreciate this attention to that common phrase, “It means the world to me.” Interesting to turn it in around…the world has meaning for me. Good for contemplation! Thank you for this 🙂
